A very persistent lie

Please, can we put this lie to rest sometime soon? To the best of my knowledge, no one has shown any evidence that links Saddam Hussein—or any Iraqi at all—to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. This does not, however, keep idiots from asserting it again and again, to the point where “seven in 10 Americans continue to believe that Iraq’s Saddam Hussein had a role in the attacks.”

To me, this merely indicates that seven in 10 Americans are total morons.

Then Ann Coulter comes along with this:

How To Lose A War

September 10, 2003

On the basis of their recent pronouncements, the position of the Democratic Party seems to be that Saddam Hussein did not hit us on 9-11, but Halliburton did.

Make that aggressive, woefully uninformed (yet somehow popular) morons.

September 16 Update

For the record:

Rumsfeld sees no link between 9/11 and Iraq

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Tuesday he had no reason to believe that Iraq’s Saddam Hussein had a hand in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

At a Pentagon news conference, Rumsfeld was asked about a poll that indicated nearly 70 percent of respondents believed the Iraqi leader probably was personally involved.

“I’ve not seen any indication that would lead me to believe that I could say that,” Rumsfeld said.

Bush even went on the record saying the same thing (now that the war’s over, of course--it’s funny I don’t recall him saying the same thing in March when he was trying to hype up how dangerous Saddam was).  It amazes me that 70% of Americans are this stupid, but it probably shouldn’t, looking at Shrub’s approval ratings.  Reality and the great, incredibly stupid, and self-absorbed American public’s perception of reality have seriously diverged.  And perception wins elections, not reality--Shrub knows saying this now may get some news play for a day or two, but most people pay more attention to J.Lo and Ben Affleck than to the hard news anyway.  I bet by the end of 2004 half the country will still think Saddam ordered 9/11--and all of them will vote for Bush.  God help America…

Yes, I’ve been a bit too busy lately to update this entry with the amazing number of Bush administration officials who seem to be stumbling all over themselves to point out that they never specifically said, “Saddam Hussein was behind the Sept. 11th attacks,” (although they certainly worked very hard to create that impression during the build-up prior to the war), but now everyone but Cheney seems to be backing away from that connection. \r
\r
If only Americans knew the truth, I’m sure Bush’s approval ratings would be much lower. Of course people will support an attack on Iraq if they are led to believe that Iraq attacked us first--even I would be hunting for Saddam right now if there was any reason to believe that was true--but, as you wrote, it’s all about perception.\r

Sure, Bush knows that this admission will cause a stir for a while, but he can count on something else to capture people’s attention before long. Look at how he said that he accepts full responsibility for his State of the Union address, then promptly went on vacation. Now that he’s back from that vacation, it seems that the general public has forgotten all about that issue.

Sako, I agree - the truth will set you free. Which, of course, is why this administration is so addicted to everything except the truth. And why it’s so vital that those of us around the globe, American and non-American, who see GWB and his gang as a clear and present danger to the future of the world, work hard to dispel the fog of lies and deception currently enveloping much of the USA.\r
